The Bookmark in the Closed Book

For the person who was right, and whose friend stopped at page ninety.

Imagine a man tidying a shelf in a spare room and finding a book that isn't his.

It's one he lent out about two years ago, and it came back at some point without a conversation, which he'd noticed at the time and decided not to think about. He'd forgotten it was there at all.

There's a bookmark in it. A supermarket receipt, folded once, at page ninety of three hundred and forty.

That's what stops him. Not the book, not the fact that it came back. The receipt at page ninety, which tells him precisely where a friend of eighteen years put it down, and roughly when, because the date is printed on it.

Page ninety is four pages after the passage he had underlined before he handed it over.

He'd underlined it because it made his case perfectly. He remembers the small satisfaction of the pen, and of saying "read that bit and then tell me I'm wrong," in a kitchen, with both of them laughing, in a conversation that had started out as a conversation.

You are able to see what your case cost and still hold everything you believe about it. The written Word says a person may possess all knowledge and be nothing without love, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from becoming a verdict on you.

The Underlining Was the Moment

Here's what's slowly becoming clear to him with the book in his hand.

He'd thought the argument went wrong later, in the difficult exchange that everybody remembers. It didn't. It went wrong at the pen.

Underlining a passage for somebody isn't sharing a book. It's handing them a sentence you've already chosen, with instructions about what they're meant to conclude by the time they reach it. The reading has been arranged in advance, and the other person is being walked toward a place you've already decided they should arrive at.

He wasn't being cruel. He'd have been genuinely upset to hear it described that way. He was doing what he'd done all his life, which is make the strongest possible case for a position he believed, and it had always worked and mostly still does.

It just doesn't work on people.

All Knowledge, and Nothing

Here's Paul, writing into a church with arguments running in every direction:

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.1 Corinthians 13:2 (KJV)

Charity there is the old word for love, in the plain sense of caring about a person rather than a point.

He builds the strongest list he can and grants every item of it. The mysteries are understood. The knowledge is real. The mountain actually moves, and he never once suggests otherwise.

Then he says the man holding all of it can be nothing, and the two halves of that sentence are allowed to stand together without either one canceling the other.

Your case can be entirely sound and the cost can be entirely real, at the same time. The written Word grants the knowledge before it names the emptiness, and the Holy Spirit makes that pair of facts survivable.

A Bookmark Marks Where Somebody Stopped Reading You

Here's what I'd carry out of that spare room if I could take a single thing away with me.

We think of a bookmark as a promise to return. Most of them aren't. Most of them mark the page where a person decided, without any drama, that they weren't going to be walked any further.

Page ninety isn't a failure of interest. It's four pages past the underlining. His friend got to the arranged sentence, understood exactly what he was being steered toward, closed the book, and gave it back without mentioning it.

And that's an extraordinarily gentle way to end something. He didn't argue. He didn't accuse. He simply stopped reading and handed it back, and eighteen years went quiet.

A bookmark is not a promise to return, it is where somebody stopped being walked. The written Word puts love above all knowledge rather than beside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can give back what a good case closed.

Nothing Here Says the Underlined Passage Was Wrong

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.

I'm not adjudicating what the book was about. If the passage said what you thought it said, it still does, and nothing in this message is a quiet suggestion that you concede a position you believe to be true.

I'm also not telling you to apologize for making a case. Making a case is honest work, and your friend is a grown man who could have argued back. The cost isn't a punishment and you haven't done anything that requires confession.

You can keep the underlining and still see what page ninety means. Scripture holds the knowledge and the loss in one line without resolving either, and the Holy Spirit does the restoring rather than the arbitrating.
