Who Is In2 Timothy 2:19

The Chair at the Edge of the Diagram

This message is for A retreat coordinator notices she placed a sincere Christian visitor from an unfamiliar tradition at the edge of the room in both the seating chart and her imagination, and needs to return the hidden boundary to God's knowing.

For the believer who has been keeping a register nobody ever asked them to keep.

Paul is near the end of his life and writing to a young man who is frightened about who can be trusted.

The letter names people. Some have gone, some have hurt him, one has been useful and one has done him a great deal of harm, and Timothy is trying to hold a church together while the ground keeps moving under him. It is an anxious letter, and the anxiety is about exactly the question you'd expect: who is actually in this.

Paul had more standing than anybody alive to answer it. He'd founded churches. He knew the people, he knew the histories, and he'd been proved right about a great many of them.

He does not answer it. What he writes instead is a sentence that takes the register out of Timothy's hands and out of his own in the same breath.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

The knowing in that sentence is His. Not Timothy, who is worried about it, and not Paul, who is qualified to say. The seal on the whole foundation is God's knowledge, and neither man in that correspondence is handed the pen.

You are standing on a foundation whose seal is God's knowing rather than your assessment. The written Word puts the register entirely in His hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps it there instead of handing it back to you.

The Chair at the Edge of the Diagram

The Diagram in Your Head

She draws a seating plan for the mid-week thing, which is a job nobody wants and she has done for six years.

Fourteen names, one round table, and a diagram on the back of an envelope with a circle for each person. She's good at it. She knows who needs the door, who cannot hear on their left, and who should not be put beside whom in February.

What she noticed on Tuesday, and has not been able to un-notice, is that she draws the circles in an order. Always the same order. The same four go on first without any thought, and there are two who go on last, and there's one she has to consciously remember.

Nobody taught her that order. She would have said, with complete sincerity, that she had no such order at all until she watched her own pencil doing it.

The Register You Never Meant to Keep

Here's the part that's uncomfortable to say plainly.

You are keeping a register. Not a written one, and not a cruel one. It's the ordering your pencil uses, the half second before you say one particular name, the way one person's opinion arrives in the room already weighted and another's arrives needing support.

You didn't decide any of it. You absorbed it, in childhood mostly, out of tones of voice and pauses and who got mentioned at which table. By the time you were old enough to evaluate it, it had stopped being a belief and become a reflex, which is why it survives beliefs you have since abandoned.

A reflex outlives the belief that installed it, which is why yours is still running. The written Word gives the knowing to God alone, and the Holy Spirit is the one able to reach a reflex that argument cannot touch.

The Edge of a Diagram Is Still Inside the Room

Here's what I'd carry off that envelope if I could take a single thing away with me.

Every circle she drew is at the same table. That's what a seating plan is. The one she has to consciously remember is not outside the room, not on a waiting list, and not in a different building. She is ordering people who are all coming on Tuesday.

That's the strange mercy hiding in her diagram. Her inherited ordering has never once had the power to remove anybody. It affects the sequence of her pencil and nothing whatsoever about who walks through the door.

So the line she's been running isn't a wall. It's an order, and an order is a thing about the person holding the pencil rather than about the people being seated.

Your inherited line orders your pencil and has never once moved a chair. The written Word settles who belongs by God's knowledge rather than anybody's sequence, and the Holy Spirit keeps the table larger than the diagram.

Nothing Here Redraws the Diagram

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.

Who belongs is not a question I am answering here. That question has not been given to me, and a message that answered it would simply have redrawn your diagram with my ordering instead of yours.

I'm also not announcing that everybody is in, which is the same act in a kinder voice. Both are the sorting itself, performed by somebody else, and the whole force of that verse is that the sorting was never ours to do.

You can put the pencil down without picking up a different one. Scripture hands the knowing back to God rather than reassigning it, and the Holy Spirit does the knowing rather than the reallocating.

The Pen You Were Never Handed

Here's the turn, and it's smaller than a decision and steadier than a mood.

That ordering was never unkindness in you. It was a reflex absorbed before you could weigh it, running on a reason nobody gave you and you could not state under questioning. Nobody installed it deliberately, and nobody has thought to look at the envelope since.

Look at it now. Fourteen circles, all at one table, all coming on Tuesday. The pen that decides who is His was never in your hand, and Paul would not take it either.

You can leave the register with the One whose seal it is. The written Word says the Lord knows them that are His, and the Holy Spirit makes the line I was handed is not the one He draws a place to rest rather than a new rule.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the name still in your mind and the envelope gone.

The Lord knows the ones who belong to Him, and what I inherited is not that line. The Word of God says the foundation of God stands sure, sealed by the fact that the Lord knows them that are His, so the register was never mine to keep. I return that visitor's standing to God's knowing rather than to my pencil, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there. I am not required to run an ordering I could not defend if anybody asked me to. I keep every good thing the people who raised me gave me, and I hand this back rather than passing it down. When that name comes to mind on Tuesday, I can pull out a chair.
