The Card in the Restricted Drawer

For the believer who has found a filing system in their own head that they never set up.

Suppose a man doing a week of volunteer work in a small archive, sorting membership cards from a society that folded in the nineties.

Most of it is dull in a pleasant way. Names, dates, dues paid year by year, the occasional note about somebody moving to Canada. Two long drawers of it, alphabetical, going back to 1931.

Then there's a third drawer at the end of the run with a paper label on it that somebody typed a very long time ago. The label says restricted.

Inside are about forty cards, identical in every way to the ones in the other drawers. Same stock, same handwriting in places, same years of dues down the side. He goes through all forty twice looking for what they have in common and cannot find it.

There's no note anywhere explaining the criterion. Whoever knew it is dead. The drawer is still labeled, the cards are still in it, and the only thing anybody can say with confidence is that somebody, once, for a reason nobody alive can reconstruct, decided these forty went somewhere else.

You are carrying a drawer like that, and you did not choose its label or write a single card in it. The written Word says the Lord knows the ones who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that knowledge where it belongs.

The Criterion Nobody Wrote Down

Here's the uncomfortable part, and it has nothing to do with archives.

You have a drawer. Everybody does. It's the small sorting mechanism that runs when you meet somebody who loves God in a way you weren't raised to recognize, and it operates before you've had a conscious thought about it.

You didn't build it. You picked it up the way children pick up accents, from tones of voice, from the particular pause an adult left before saying one particular name, from a hundred small signals nobody intended to transmit as instruction.

And, like the drawer in that archive, yours has no written criterion. If somebody asked you to state the rule you'd struggle, and you'd find that what you produced was a rationalization built afterward to explain a sorting that had already happened.

The Seal on the Foundation

Here's Paul, writing to Timothy in a letter full of anxiety about who was drifting and who could be trusted:

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

Read who's doing the knowing. Not Timothy, who is the one worried about the drift. Not Paul, who has more standing than anybody in the letter to make a list.

He is the one who knows His own. That's the seal on the foundation, and the verb belongs entirely to God, and neither of the two men in that correspondence is invited to operate it.

You are standing on a foundation whose seal is God's knowledge rather than your assessment. The written Word gives the knowing to Him alone, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than delegating it to you.

A Label Outlives the Reason for It

Here's what I'd carry out of that archive if I could take a single thing away with me.

Somebody typed that label with a reason in their head. The reason may even have been a decent one at the time, responding to a situation nobody now remembers, and it is at least as likely to have been kind as cruel.

What the label cannot do is carry the reason with it. It carries the sorting and nothing else, and that's why it's still working perfectly in 2026 with nobody alive who could justify a single card in that drawer.

Your inherited line is doing exactly that. It still sorts, briskly and accurately, in a mind that would not be able to state the rule if pressed. The sorting has outlived every argument that ever supported it, and it is running on you rather than for you.

A label keeps sorting long after the reason for it has died. The written Word puts the knowing in God's hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can retire a criterion nobody can any longer name.

Nothing Here Draws a Different Line

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do real harm and I refuse to write it.

I am not going to settle that for you or for anyone. That is not a question I have been given, and a message that answered it would simply have rebuilt the drawer with a friendlier label on the front.

I'm also not announcing that everybody is in, which is the same act wearing a kinder coat. Both of those are the sorting you inherited, performed by somebody else, and the whole point of the verse is that the sorting is not ours.

You can put down the drawer without picking up a new one. Scripture hands the knowing back to God rather than reassigning it, and the Holy Spirit does the knowing rather than the reallocating.
