Who Is In2 Timothy 2:19

The Name Beyond The Margin

This message is for A woman making a prayer list writes a coworker's name beyond the pencil margin because his Christian tradition feels unfamiliar, and she needs to hand his belonging back to God instead of redrawing the line.

For the believer who noticed where her own pencil stopped.

Paul is an old man writing to a young one who is frightened, and he names names in that letter.

He names the ones who left, the one who did him a great deal of harm, and the household that refreshed him when nobody else would. It is the least abstract letter he ever wrote. Timothy is trying to hold something steady while people around him drift, and he plainly wants to know who he can count.

Anybody in Paul's position would have written the list. He had founded these churches, he knew the individuals, and he had been proved right about a considerable number of them.

He writes something else instead, and it is one of the strangest refusals in the letters.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

The Lord knows. That's the seal on the foundation, and the most qualified man alive to make the list declines to make it, in writing, to the person asking him for it.

You are holding a question that the most qualified man in the letters refused to answer. The written Word seals the knowing as God's own, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than passing it to you.

The Name Beyond The Margin

Where the Pencil Stopped

She keeps a prayer list on the same pad she has used for eleven years, ruled with a margin down the left side.

Names go inside the margin. That's not a rule anybody set, it's simply what a ruled pad is for, and she has written perhaps four hundred names in that column over a decade.

On Tuesday she wrote a colleague's name in the space to the left of the margin line. Outside it, in the narrow strip that isn't meant for writing, at a slight angle, smaller than the others.

She noticed as she did it and carried on anyway. He's a man she has worked beside for two years. His faith is real and unmistakable, it comes from a tradition she has almost no contact with, and her hand put him in the gutter of the page.

The Refusal in the Letter

Look again at what Paul does, because the shape of it matters more than the content.

He does not say the drifters are fine. He is plainly worried and he says so all over the letter, and two verses later he tells Timothy to depart from iniquity, which is not the language of a man with no standards.

What he refuses to do is convert his worry into a register. He names behavior, he names individuals who have harmed him, and when it comes to the question of who is really God's he stops and puts that in one place, sealed, with God's name on it.

Worry about the drift and a refusal to keep the register belong together. The written Word gives the knowing to God without softening anything else, and the Holy Spirit keeps the two joined in you.

The Margin Is Where the Page Stops Being For You

Here's what I'd carry off that pad if I could take a single thing away with me.

A margin is not a boundary between good and bad. It's the edge of the space the page has designated for writing, and everything beyond it is the part of the paper the pad does not consider to be in use.

That is precisely what her hand did to a colleague. Not condemned. Not excluded. Filed in the part of the page that isn't quite in use, at an angle, smaller, where writing is possible but not intended.

And that is how most inherited boundaries actually work. They very rarely put anybody outside. They put people in the gutter, where they can still be prayed for, and where something in the geometry says they are not quite the main column.

An inherited line rarely excludes anybody, it puts them in the gutter of the page. The written Word leaves the knowing sealed with God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can bring a name back inside the margin.

Nothing Here Rules a New Margin

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I refuse to write it.

I will not be handing you a ruling on anybody. That question was declined by the apostle who had the standing to answer it, and I am not going to pick it up in his place.

I'm also not announcing that everyone is in. That is the same register kept from the opposite end, and it is still a person doing what the verse seals to God.

You can move a name without appointing yourself the one who decides. Scripture hands the knowing back to God rather than reassigning it, and the Holy Spirit does the knowing rather than the re-ruling.

The Name You Can Bring Back Inside

Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.

That angle on the page was never unkindness in you. It was an inherited boundary moving your hand to the gutter, on a pad you have used for eleven years, for a man who rearranged a month for you in March. Nobody installed it deliberately, and nobody has thought to look at the left edge of the page.

Look at it now. One name outside the rule, smaller, at a slight angle, in your own handwriting.

You can hand his belonging back to the One whose seal it is. The written Word says the Lord knows them that are His, and the Holy Spirit makes the line I was handed is not the one He draws a place to rest rather than a new margin.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the pad open at Tuesday's page.

He knows whose they are, and the line handed down to me is not His. The Word of God says the foundation of God stands sure, sealed by the fact that the Lord knows them that are His, so his belonging was never mine to place. I hand that belonging back to God rather than redrawing the line myself, and the Holy Spirit keeps the knowing in His hands. I am not required to keep a register the apostle himself declined to keep. I keep every good thing the people who taught me gave me, and I hand this back rather than passing it on. When I write his name tomorrow, I can write it in the column.
