The Name Above the Boxes

For the volunteer who freezes at one line on a welcome card while the queue keeps moving.

Suppose a man who has given his Saturday mornings to a food pantry for two years, and who has never once been asked this until today.

The new intake cards came printed on Thursday. Halfway down there is a line that says church affiliation, with a row of small boxes after it and one marked other. He is standing at the end of a trestle table with a pen, and there are nine people in the queue behind him, and a crate of tinned tomatoes waiting to be opened.

He looks at the boxes. Each one has a history attached that will arrive in the room shortly after the tick does. One of them belongs to a family who stopped speaking to his family in 1994. One of them is the building where he was married. One of them is where he actually goes now.

The woman behind him asks if he is all right. He says yes, ticks other, and feels the small dishonesty of it all the way through the tomatoes.

The name written above every one of those boxes is older than all of them, and it has never once been optional for you. The written Word gives that name to working believers in a foreign city before any of the later names existed, and the Holy Spirit keeps it live and current rather than leaving it in a history lesson.

What a Row of Small Boxes Does to a Willing Man

The card is not the problem. He would tick anything if it only meant a chaplain or a lift home.

What happened at the trestle table is that a form asked him to declare a side in a room where he had come to hand out food. Two of the boxes carry a quarrel he did not start and cannot settle standing up. So he took the exit marked other, which was honest about nothing and cost him something anyway.

Watch what that does over years. A man who loves God learns to route around the question. He gets skilled at the tick that gives away least. Eventually the most settled fact about him is the one he is quickest to blur.

He is not ashamed. He is protecting a room he has come to serve, and it is costing him the plain use of his own mouth.

The Year Nobody Has Heard Of

There is a city in the account called Antioch, a long way north of Jerusalem, full of people from somewhere else.

Believers pushed out by trouble arrived and started talking about Jesus to Greeks. That had not been planned and had not been agreed anywhere, and a great many of them trusted Him anyway. Barnabas came up to look at it, and the text says that when he saw it he was glad. He went and found Saul, brought him back, and the two of them taught in that city for a whole year.

The closing line of the verse is this:

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.Acts 11:26 (KJV)

Notice where the word came from. Not from the teachers, not from a meeting, not from the people inside the room. It came from neighbors, from traders, from whoever was watching them carry crates up and down that street for twelve months.

You are named for whose you are before anybody gets to name you for which side you took. Scripture places that name on ordinary believers in Antioch, and the Holy Spirit keeps it a present belonging instead of an old fact.

The First Name Came From Outside the Argument

This is the part I would carry out of the building if I could only take one thing.

The oldest word for your faith was supplied by people who had no stake in any church dispute, because there were no church disputes yet. It was not a position taken against another position. It was a description of a resemblance that strangers could see from the pavement.

Which means the word does not belong to any of the boxes on that card. It sits above the whole row. A man ticking other at a trestle table already carries a name that outranks every option printed under it, including the one he would have ticked if the room had been safer.

You are free to answer out of resemblance instead of out of allegiance. The written Word gives that name to people who were simply recognized in the street, and the Holy Spirit is the one producing the resemblance, so the answer is His work before it is your defense.

What This Message Is Not Asking of You

Let me be direct, because there is a version of this that would hurt you and I will not write it.

Nobody here is asking you to leave the box you would have ticked. The name in the place where the gospel first reached you is not a corruption of anything. Somebody in that tradition prayed for you before you existed, and that is part of why you ever heard His name.

This is not a replacement for that name. It is the ground under it. If this word ever became one more box in the row, it would have become precisely the thing it describes the absence of.

You hold the older name and the later one at once, and holding both costs you neither. Scripture sets the Antioch name underneath every later name without canceling a single one, and the Holy Spirit keeps it load bearing rather than competitive.
