The Name Under the Peel-Off Badge

For the believer who keeps peeling off a label and finding another one underneath.

Imagine a man in a cold vestry on a Monday morning with twelve borrowed coats over his arm.

They were lent for the weekend by twelve different congregations, and every one of them still has a sticky badge on the lapel from the welcome desk. His job before he returns them is to peel all twelve off, because the adhesive marks the cloth if you leave it a week.

He works through them at the trestle table with the radiator ticking. Some come away clean. Some leave a gray rectangle you can only get out with a cloth and patience. One of them is a navy wool coat older than he is. It has a badge from Saturday sitting directly on a faded one from some event years back, which is sitting on a small woven name tape sewn in by somebody's mother.

Three layers on one lapel, and he stands there holding the coat, because he knows exactly what that feels like.

Under every badge somebody has stuck on you there's a name that was woven in, and it doesn't peel. The written Word records it being given in a trading city before any later name existed, and the Holy Spirit keeps it living in you today rather than leaving it in a story about somebody else.

What the Gray Rectangle Leaves Behind

Every badge he takes off leaves a mark, and that's the part nobody warns you about.

You can leave a tradition, or drift out of one, or move towns and never find another room like the first one. What you can't do is come away unmarked. The vocabulary stays. The reflexes stay. You still flinch at a particular phrase and warm to another one, and you can still hear exactly how your first church said the word grace.

So when somebody asks what you are now, you're answering for several layers at once. You give the current badge, and then you feel obliged to explain the gray rectangle under it, and by then the conversation has gone somewhere neither of you wanted.

That isn't dishonesty. It's what happens to anybody who's carried more than one label and refuses to pretend the earlier ones never existed.

The Word That Went On Before Any Badge

There's a city in the account called Antioch, a long way north of Jerusalem, crowded with traders and people who weren't from there.

Trouble had scattered them, and they arrived speaking about Jesus to Greeks, which was outside anything anybody had agreed. They believed in considerable numbers. Barnabas came up to look at it, and the account says that when he saw it he was glad. He went and found Saul, brought him back, and the two of them taught in that city for a full year.

Here's the closing line of the verse:

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.Acts 11:26 (KJV)

Nobody printed that word on anything. There was no council, no founding document, no desk where it was handed out. It came from neighbors who'd watched a group of ordinary workers for twelve months and needed a way to describe what they kept seeing.

You're described by whose you are before you're ever labeled by which room you came from. Scripture gives that name to disciples who never collected it from anywhere, and the Holy Spirit keeps the description true in you now.

Adhesive on the Surface, Thread Through the Cloth

Here's what I'd carry out of that vestry if I could take a single thing away with me.

A badge is adhesive. It's designed to be removed, and the strength of it is measured in how long it holds before it lets go. The name tape sewn in by somebody's mother isn't adhesive at all. It's thread through cloth, and the only way to get it out is to damage the coat.

The word given at Antioch is the thread. It never sat on the surface of a believer's life, which is why it survived every badge that came after it and why not one of those badges had to be peeled for it to stay true.

That's the reason the man in the vestry can hold a coat with three layers on the lapel and not feel like a fraud. Two of the three were always temporary. The one underneath them never was.

You carry a name that went in with thread rather than adhesive, so nothing anybody sticks on top of it replaces it. The written Word gives it as a plain description of what believers already were, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping that description accurate in you.

Nothing Here Asks You to Peel Anything Off

Let me be direct, because there's a version of this message that would hurt you and I won't write it.

The badge on your lapel right now isn't a corruption of anything. Somebody in that room loves Christ at real cost, and part of the reason you're still walking with Him is that they do. I'm not asking you to take it off, and I'm not ranking the twelve coats.

This isn't a replacement badge. It's the cloth. If this word ever became a thirteenth sticker for the welcome desk, it would have become exactly the thing it describes the absence of, and I'd sooner say nothing at all.

You can wear the badge and stand on the thread, because keeping both costs you neither. Scripture sets the Antioch name underneath every later name without canceling one of them, and the Holy Spirit keeps it load bearing rather than competing.
