The Word on Every Library Card

This message is for A church librarian sorting returned books by twelve congregation labels needs to say Christian first without erasing the tradition named on any borrower's card.

For the believer who has been sorting people all week without ever deciding to.

The oldest name you carry isn't a claim. It's a receipt.

That's the sentence I'd put on the wall of every church hall in the country if anybody let me. We treat the word Christian as a position somebody takes, something you argue for and hold against pressure. It started life as none of those. It started as a note somebody else wrote down about what they'd seen, which is the difference between a receipt and a manifesto.

She's in the back room of a church library on a Wednesday with a returns trolley and twelve rubber bands.

Twelve congregations share this lending stock, and every borrower card is filed by the room they come from. Her whole afternoon is sorting: this one to the green band, that one to the blue, that one to the box for the group that meets in the school. She's been doing it for six years and she's never once thought about it.

Then she notices the line at the top of every card, the one that's been printed on the stock since before she started, which reads Christian Lending Library, est. 1948.

The word printed across every card in your hands was there before any of the bands you're sorting by. The written Word records it being given in a trading city before any later name existed, and the Holy Spirit keeps it live in you rather than leaving it in a story about someone else.

The Word on Every Library Card

What Six Years of Sorting Does to a Person

Nobody taught her to sort people. She was taught to sort cards, and the people came along with them.

That's how it happens. You learn a filing system because somebody has to run the trolley, and thirty months later you can tell which band a stranger belongs to within two sentences of meeting them. You don't do it unkindly. You just do it, the way you'd sort post, and you'd be embarrassed to have it described out loud.

The cost lands on you as much as on anybody else. Once you're a sorter, you're also sortable, and some part of you is always braced for which band a room is going to put you in. That brace is why you hesitate when somebody asks a simple question about what you are.

You aren't judgmental. You've been handed a trolley and a set of rubber bands, and nobody ever told you that you were allowed to look at the header on the card.

The Word at the End of a Year

There's a city in the account called Antioch, a long way north of Jerusalem, full of traders and travelers who weren't from there.

People driven out of their own homes turned up there and started telling Greeks about Jesus, with nobody's permission and no plan behind it. A great many trusted Him. Barnabas came up to look, and the account says that when he saw it he was glad. He fetched Saul, brought him back, and they taught in that city for a full year.

Then comes the closing line of the verse:

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.Acts 11:26 (KJV)

Nobody claimed that word. No council convened, no founding document was drawn up, and no believer stood up and announced it. The neighbors wrote it down, in effect, because they'd watched for twelve months and this was what they'd seen.

You're recorded as whose you are before anybody bands you by which sort you are. Scripture gives that name to disciples who never argued for it, and the Holy Spirit keeps the record current in you today.

A Receipt Doesn't Need Defending

Here's what I'd carry out of that back room if I could take a single thing.

A claim has to be held. You make it, somebody tests it, and you either hold your ground or you don't. That's exhausting, and it's why the question about what you are always lands like a small examination.

A receipt is different. It isn't held, it's kept. It records something that already happened, and nobody's opinion of it alters a line. You can lose the argument about a receipt and still own the thing it's for.

The word given at Antioch is a receipt. It's the neighbors' record that something had already happened, that these particular people plainly belonged to this particular Christ, and there's no examination anywhere in it.

You hold a name that was written down rather than argued for, so nobody can test you out of it. The written Word gives it as something recorded rather than claimed, and the Holy Spirit is the one making true today what the record says.

Nothing Here Puts Your Band in the Bin

Let me be direct, because there's a version of this message that would hurt you and I won't write it.

Not one of those twelve bands is a corruption of anything. Somebody in every one of those rooms loved Christ at real cost, and part of the reason there's a lending library at all is that they did. I'm not asking you to empty the trolley or to rank the boxes.

This isn't a thirteenth band. It's the header printed across every card in the drawer. If it ever became one more sorting color, it would have turned into exactly the thing it describes the absence of.

You can keep your band and stand on the header, because holding both costs you neither. Scripture sets the Antioch name across every later name without canceling one of them, and the Holy Spirit keeps it load bearing instead of competitive.

The Header You Were Always Allowed to Read

Here's the turn, and it's smaller than a decision and larger than a mood.

The brace you carry was never a shortage of conviction. It was six years of holding a set of rubber bands and assuming the bands were the only words in the room. Nobody told you that you were allowed to look at the header, and nobody has thought to mention it since.

I'm mentioning it now. Printed across every card there's a description, written by strangers in a foreign city, and it covers every band in the drawer and it covers you.

You have the older word in your mouth, and it's complete with no band around it. The written Word gave it to ordinary disciples who'd simply been recognized, and the Holy Spirit makes I belong to Christ a home you're standing in rather than a claim you're defending.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the cards squared and the trolley parked.

I belong to Christ, and that word was written down about me before I ever had to argue for it. The Word of God says the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch, so the name I stand on is a record and not a position. The Holy Spirit makes that name a living belonging in me today, and not a band I'm sorting myself into. I don't owe anybody an examination before I'm allowed to say whose I am. I keep the room I belong to, and I hold it on top of this one and never against it. When the question comes around again, I can answer it without bracing, because a receipt was never mine to defend.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
