For the person who counts the eight and cannot stop seeing the four.
You've been on committees for nineteen years and you have never once been able to enjoy a win.
Everybody assumes you're being modest about it. You're not. The moment the chair says the numbers, some part of you goes straight past the eight and starts working on the four, and you do it before you've had a conscious thought about anything.
Eight is an abstraction. It's a result, it goes in the minutes, and nobody can picture eight of anything.
Four is a number of faces. You know exactly which four. You know which of them will be fine by Thursday, which one will be scrupulously polite for about six months, and which one has a daughter starting at the same school as yours in September.
So the motion passes, and you're the person who proposed it, and you drive home doing arithmetic that nobody asked you for.
You are able to see the four without treating your own conviction as the thing that needs correcting. The written Word grants every gift on the list before it names the emptiness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that pair of facts bearable rather than paralyzing.
The Arithmetic Nobody Asks You to Do
Here's what makes this hard to say out loud in a room of sensible people.
Everybody there believes decisions are made by counting. That's what the procedure is for, and it's a good procedure, and the alternative is somebody deciding on their own in a corridor. The count is the fairest instrument anybody has come up with.
What the count cannot do is tell you what happened to the room. Eight to four records an outcome and says nothing whatsoever about the four, who are still in the room, still on the rota, and still coming to the thing at Christmas.
You aren't weak for noticing. You're the only person in the meeting who has understood that the count settled a question and did not settle a room, and you've understood it without ever quite putting it into words.
Everything, and Nothing
Here's Paul, writing to a church where arguments ran in every direction:
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.1 Corinthians 13:2 (KJV)
Charity is the old word for love, in the plain sense of caring about a person rather than a point.
Look at how he builds it. He assembles the most impressive list of capability anybody could assemble and grants every item on it. The mysteries are genuinely understood. The mountain genuinely moves.
Then he says the man holding all of it may be nothing, and both halves are left standing. Nothing on the list gets withdrawn, and the emptiness does not get argued away.
Being right about the motion and being troubled by the four are both true at once. The written Word refuses to cancel either half of that, and the Holy Spirit makes it a description you can carry rather than a verdict on you.
Four Is a Number of Faces
Here's what I'd carry out of that meeting room if I could take a single thing away with me.
Every system we have for deciding together converts people into quantities, and it has to. That's not a corruption of the process, it's the process, and a committee that refused to count would simply hand the decision to whoever talked longest.
But the conversion only runs one way. You can turn four people into a number in about a second. Nothing on earth turns the number back into the four people, and the four walk out of that room still being people while the number goes into the minutes and stops existing.
That's why the drive home feels like it does. You did the conversion, correctly and in public, and then you were the only person who bothered to reverse it.
A count turns four people into a number, and nothing turns the number back. The written Word puts love above the whole list of capability, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps the four as faces in you rather than as a result.
Nothing Here Says You Should Have Voted Differently
Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I refuse to write it.
I'm not adjudicating the motion. If you proposed it because you believed it was right, then you did the honest thing, and nothing in this message is a quiet suggestion that you should have withdrawn it to keep four people comfortable.
I'm also not asking you to apologize for winning a vote. An apology for a decision you'd make again would be dishonest, and the four would hear it before you'd finished the sentence.
You can stand by the motion entirely and still see the four as faces. Scripture holds the being right and the being troubled in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit does the reconciling rather than the arbitrating.
The Arithmetic You Can Put Down
Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.
Nineteen years of not enjoying a win was never weakness in you. It was the only person in the room who kept converting the number back into faces, doing it alone on the drive home, with nobody to say that the reversing was the right instinct. Nobody arranged that, and nobody has thought to name it since.
I'm naming it now. The count decided the question. It never decided the room, and the room is still yours to be in.
You can carry the motion and still walk toward the four. The written Word puts love above all knowledge without calling the knowledge false, and the Holy Spirit makes I would rather be at the table than at the head of it something you can do at a school gate.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this once, slowly, with the minutes closed and the drive over.
I have been right and lonely at once, and I would rather be at the table than above it. The Word of God says a person may understand all mysteries and all knowledge and still be nothing without love, so my motion and my four faces are both real. The Holy Spirit keeps them as people in me rather than as a result in the minutes. I am done paying for a victory by counting it alone in the car. I keep every reason I proposed it, and I hold the four over the count rather than under it. When I see one of them at the gate in September, I can ask which class.
