My Side Won1 Corinthians 13:2

The Trophy Beside the Empty Chair

This message is for the silent family group chat three days after you won the argument and lost the room

For the person whose case was unanswerable and whose brother has stopped coming.

Paul had every credential a man could hold, and he spends a good deal of ink telling the Corinthians so.

Then in the middle of a letter about a church that had split itself into parties, he writes a paragraph that people now read at weddings and that was composed for a fight. It is the least sentimental thing in the New Testament, and it was aimed directly at people who were winning arguments against each other.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.1 Corinthians 13:2 (KJV)

Charity is the old word for love, meaning the plain business of caring about a person rather than a point.

Notice that he grants the whole inventory. Prophecy, mysteries, all knowledge, mountain-moving faith. He does not say one item of it is false, and he is describing people who genuinely had these gifts in that room.

Then he says the man holding all of it may be nothing, and the two facts sit in one sentence without either dissolving the other.

You can hold an unanswerable case and an empty chair at the same time, and Scripture says both. The written Word grants the whole list before it names the emptiness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that pair survivable.

The Trophy Beside the Empty Chair

What Is Actually on the Shelf

There is a small engraved thing on his shelf from the county association, and there is a chair at the Sunday table that has been empty since Easter.

Those two facts are related, and the relationship is not complicated. He was right about the land, he was right about the paperwork, and he was right about what their father had intended, and he proved all three in a way that left his brother with nowhere to stand.

He'd go through the whole file again tomorrow and reach the same conclusion. That isn't stubbornness. The documents say what they say.

What he cannot do is look at the shelf without looking at the chair, and he has begun moving the engraved thing behind a photograph, which he'd be embarrassed to admit to anybody.

Winning Well Is Still Winning

Here's the part he keeps circling, usually at about four in the morning.

He did it properly. No shouting, no involving cousins, no letters that were really for an audience. He behaved considerably better than most people would have, and every person who knows the story has told him so.

And behaving well did not change the result. His brother lost, in front of the family, on a matter where their father's name was on the paperwork. Doing it graciously made it survivable for everybody except the one person it happened to.

You know that discovery. It isn't self-pity. It's the realization that there is no version of comprehensively defeating somebody you love that leaves them undefeated, and that your good manners were never going to be the variable.

Being gracious in victory was never the variable that decided the cost. The written Word grants the whole capability before it names what capability cannot do, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can restore what a clean win emptied.

A Trophy Is a Thing You Look At Alone

Here's what I'd carry off that shelf if I could take a single thing away with me.

Everything you win by being right is an object. A finding, an engraving, a decision in minutes, a file with a conclusion at the end of it. Objects are durable, portable, and entirely silent.

Everything you lose by being right is a person, and people are none of those. They are not durable, they cannot be filed, and the one thing they do that an object cannot is answer you.

That asymmetry is why the shelf has begun to bother him. He acquired a thing that cannot speak, at the cost of the only person who could have said the sentence he actually wanted to hear.

You won an object that cannot answer you, at the cost of somebody who could. The written Word puts love above the whole inventory rather than beside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a chair from being permanently empty.

Nothing Here Says You Were Wrong About the Land

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do you real harm and I won't write it.

I'm not adjudicating the estate. If the documents say what you believe they say, then they do, and nothing in this message is a quiet suggestion that you should undo an outcome you hold to be just in order to buy your brother back.

I'm also not telling you to apologize for the finding. An apology you don't mean would be an insult to a man who has already lost something, and he would hear it immediately.

You can hold the whole outcome and still walk toward the chair. Scripture keeps the being right and the being alone in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit does the restoring rather than the arbitrating.

The Thing You Are Allowed to Want

Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.

Moving that engraving behind a photograph was never shame in you. It's what a man does when he is holding an object that cannot answer him and cannot be shared, and nobody has ever said out loud that this is the shape of winning. Nobody set you up for it, and nobody has thought to name it since.

I'm naming it now. You are allowed to want your brother more than the outcome, and wanting him costs you nothing you actually believe about the land.

You can keep the whole finding and still be the one who goes down with the bar. The written Word puts love above all knowledge without calling the knowledge false, and the Holy Spirit makes I would rather be at the table than at the head of it a Saturday with a gate in it.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the shelf behind you and the phone in your hand.

Being correct has not heated a single room. Given the choice, I want them back rather than the judgment. The Word of God says a person may hold all knowledge and mountain-moving faith and still be nothing without love, so my finding and my empty chair are both honest. The Holy Spirit keeps me caring about a man I happen to be right about. I am done paying for a victory with a silent family and an empty chair in the room. I keep every document in that file, and I hold my brother over it rather than under it. When the gate needs doing properly in the spring, I can be the one who rings first.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
