The Dot Beyond the Seating Plan

For the believer who found the boundary in her own handwriting.

There are ninety two dots on the plan and one of them is outside the circle.

She drew it herself on Monday, on the big sheet, with the good pen. It's a sensory-friendly service and the layout matters more than most people realize: low light near the back, a clear run to the door, nobody boxed in, space for a wheelchair at three points rather than one.

She knows exactly who that dot is. He's a visitor from a tradition nobody in this building has much contact with, and he's been four times, and he has never asked for anything. He brought a tray of flapjack in August.

She put him there without thinking. That's the part she has been sitting with. There was no deliberation, no moment of judgment she could point to and regret. Her hand simply placed him an inch out, in her own handwriting, on her own plan, and moved on to the next name.

You can find the boundary you inherited by looking at where your own hand put somebody. The written Word says the Lord knows the ones who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that knowledge in His hands rather than yours.

The Inch You Can't Explain

If you asked her why, she would give you a reason, and the reason would be false.

She'd say something about the aisle, or about him being new, or about wanting him to have an easy exit if the noise got much for him. All of those are plausible and none of them is what happened, because what happened took less than a second and involved no reasoning at all.

That's the nature of an inherited line. It doesn't arrive as a judgment you make. It arrives as a hand moving, a name written slightly lower on a list, a chair placed an inch clear of a horseshoe, and then a perfectly respectable explanation assembled afterward to cover the gap.

You have done this. Everybody has. It isn't cruelty and it isn't hypocrisy, and the proof of that is how badly she feels about an inch that nobody but her will ever notice.

The Seal on the Foundation

Here's Paul, writing to Timothy in a letter full of anxiety about who could be trusted and who had drifted away:

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

Read where certainty sits in that sentence. Not with Timothy, who is the one worried. Not with Paul, who knew these people personally and had been proved right about a great many of them.

The foundation stands sure because the Lord knows, and that knowing is named as the seal on the whole structure. It is the one thing in the letter that neither of those men is invited to handle.

The knowledge of who belongs is sealed, and the seal is God's rather than yours. The written Word assigns the knowing to Him alone, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than passing it down to a woman with a pen.

An Inch Is a Long Way When You're Sitting In It

Here's what I'd carry off that sheet if I could take a single thing away with me.

On paper an inch is nothing. It would not survive a photocopier, and anybody glancing at that plan would see ninety three dots in a horseshoe and think no more about it.

In a room it is not an inch. It's the difference between being in the shape and being beside it, and the person sitting in that chair will feel the geometry without ever being able to name what he's feeling. He will not complain, because there is nothing to complain about. He will simply come five times instead of twelve.

That's the cost of an inherited line and the reason it survives so well. It never produces an event anybody can point at. It produces a slow thinning, and the thinning gets attributed to the person who drifted away.

An inherited line never causes an incident, it only causes a slow thinning. The written Word leaves the knowing with God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can show you an inch before it becomes an absence.

Nothing Here Draws a New Circle

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.

I'm not telling you who is in. That question has not been handed to me, and a message that answered it would simply have drawn your horseshoe with my hand, which helps nobody at all.

I'm also not announcing that everyone is in. That is the same act performed warmly, and it is still a person doing what the verse says God does.

You can move the dot without appointing yourself the one who decides. Scripture gives the knowing to God and to nobody else, and the Holy Spirit holds it rather than handing you a pencil.
