The Words I InheritedRomans 10:9

The Pulse Beneath the Old Sentence

This message is for A percussionist who has repeated an inherited confession at rehearsal speed needs to slow one old sentence to the pulse of his own breath and agree rather than perform.

For the believer who has been reading a heartbeat as though it were a label.

Suppose a woman who tunes pianos for a living, sitting in a church hall on a Wednesday with nothing to do for eleven minutes.

The choir is late. She's finished the tuning, the lid is down, and there's a laminated card screwed to the wall beside the noticeboard with the old words printed on it in a serif face somebody chose in about 1978.

She reads it, because there's nothing else in the room. She reads it the way you read the back of a cereal packet, which is to say she takes in the shape of it and almost none of the content.

Then a thing happens that only happens to people who spend their lives listening. She notices the rhythm.

The sentence has a pulse in it. It rises through three clauses and settles on the fourth, the way a phrase of music does, and whoever assembled those words assembled them to be said out loud by a room full of people breathing together.

She has heard that sentence perhaps four hundred times. She has never once noticed that it was built.

You are holding words that were made to be spoken, and there is a pulse in them you have never listened for. The written Word puts belief in the heart and confession in the mouth in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that pulse live when the words get said.

The Pulse Beneath the Old Sentence

What a Laminated Card Does to a Sentence

The card isn't the problem. Somebody screwed it to that wall so people could find the words, and that's a kindness.

The trouble is what a printed thing does to a spoken thing. On a wall, in a serif face, behind laminate, a sentence stops being an utterance and becomes a notice. You read notices with your eyes, at speed, checking for information you might need.

So four hundred repetitions go past as text. The sentence is filed with the fire exit instructions and the rota, and the pulse in it, which is the whole reason it survived twenty centuries of mouths, is completely invisible on a wall.

You've read that card. It isn't inattention and it isn't a shallow faith. It's what happens when something made for the ear is handed to you through the eye, week after week, until you forget it ever had a sound.

Heart and Mouth in the Same Breath

Here's the verse people quote about believing, with the mouth in it that so often gets left out:

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.Romans 10:9 (KJV)

Notice that the mouth is named first. Not because it matters more, but because the writer cannot imagine the two coming apart, and the mouth is the half we've quietly turned into a card on a wall.

Confession is a sound. It happens in air, it takes time, and it has a shape that a room can hear. That's not decoration on top of the belief. It's the belief finding its way out.

You hold something that was built for air rather than for laminate. The written Word names the mouth alongside the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying the sound of it out of you today.

The Rhythm Is the Evidence of Use

Here's what I'd carry out of that hall if I could take a single thing away with me.

Sentences that are only ever written don't develop a pulse. They develop clauses, and qualifications, and a careful architecture for the eye. You can tell a written sentence at forty paces because it doesn't want to be said out loud.

A sentence with a rhythm in it has been spoken. Repeatedly, by many people, over a long time, and the rhythm is what survives when thousands of mouths wear a thing down to the shape that's easiest to mean together.

So the pulse she noticed isn't ornament. It's evidence. It's the fingerprint of every room that ever said those words before hers, worn into the sentence like a hollow in a doorstep.

The rhythm in those words is the fingerprint of everybody who said them first. The written Word hands the faith on in language shaped by use, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping that shape alive in your own mouth.

This Isn't a Rule About Which Words to Say

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.

Nothing here makes those particular words binding, and nothing suggests a believer whose room has never had a laminated card is missing anything at all. Plenty of people who love Christ deeply have never recited a line in their lives, and they hold the identical faith with the identical grip.

I'm also not asking you to feel bad about four hundred readings that went past as text. The pulse was in there through every one of them, waiting, entirely unbothered.

You can treat these words as a gift rather than a requirement, whoever says them and whoever doesn't. Scripture supplies the form without measuring anybody, and the Holy Spirit does the meaning rather than the marking.

The Sound You Can Give It Back

Here's the turn, and it's smaller than a decision and steadier than a mood.

What flattened those words was never unbelief in you. It was a spoken thing handed to you through the eye, on a wall, in a serif face, until your mind filed it with the rota. Nobody did that deliberately, and nobody has thought to say it out loud slowly in your hearing since.

I'm saying it now. The sentence has a pulse. It was built by mouths, for mouths, and the only thing it has ever needed from you is air.

You can give the old sentence its sound back and hear what it was built to do. The written Word puts your mouth in the verse beside your heart, and the Holy Spirit makes I am not reciting, I am agreeing something that happens in the room's air.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the lid down and the room empty.

These words did not begin with me, and they are not waiting on me to make them true. The Word of God names my mouth alongside my heart, so what I hold was built for air and not for laminate. The Holy Spirit carries that sound out of me today, and not only past my eyes. This is agreement, not repetition. I keep every reading that went by as text, and I hold this one over them rather than against them. When the room says it again next week, I can hear the pulse underneath it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
