What the Beam Was Built to Carry

For the believer who can name every load he refuses and not the one he was made for.

Paul wrote that letter from a prison cell to a church that was coming apart at the seams.

Jews and Greeks in one room, with a history between them that went back centuries and had scripture on both sides of it. He had every reason to spend the letter adjudicating, and by any ordinary standard he was the man qualified to do it.

He doesn't. When he reaches the part where he has to hold them together, he doesn't rule on a single disputed question. He piles up what's shared until there's no room left to stand on the differences.

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling.Ephesians 4:4 (KJV)

Not one word of correction in it. Not a single reference to the argument he'd been dealing with three chapters earlier. Just load bearing material, laid across a gap, with nothing decorative anywhere in the sentence.

You were built to carry something, and the load is what you were made for rather than what you refuse. The written Word describes the faith in positives that hold weight, and the Holy Spirit is putting that weight on you rather than leaving the sentence on a page.

The Man Who Can Name Every Load He Won't Take

He's a builder, and he's very good, and he has an answer for everything he won't do.

He won't span that distance in softwood. He won't notch a joist there, he won't sit a beam on that wall without checking what's under it, and he won't sign off somebody else's work he hasn't seen opened up. Every single one of those positions is correct, and they've kept people safe for thirty years.

Ask him what he's proudest of building and there's a pause. Not because there's nothing. Because the answers come slowly, and the refusals come instantly, and that ratio is the whole shape of a working life.

You've got that ratio in your faith. The things you'd never say, never join, never sign off on: those arrive fully formed. The thing you're actually holding up takes a moment to find.

Material That Does Nothing but Carry

Look again at what Paul reaches for in that room.

One body. One Spirit. One hope. There's no ornament in that list and no argument in it either. It's the structural minimum, laid across a gap between two groups who could not agree about a great deal.

And it works because it doesn't try to resolve anything. A beam doesn't settle the dispute between the two walls it sits on. It simply spans them, takes the weight, and lets both of them go on being walls.

You're standing on material that spans rather than settles. The written Word supplies the load bearing sentence rather than the verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one making it carry your weight today.

A Beam Is Defined by Its Load, Not by What It Keeps Out

Here's what I'd carry off that site if I could take a single thing away with me.

Nobody has ever specified a beam by what it excludes. You don't order timber by saying what you don't want it to do. Every beam in every building on earth is specified by its span and its load, which are both statements about what it carries.

The refusals matter enormously, and they're not decoration. But they describe the limits of the material rather than the purpose of it, and a man who can only give you limits has told you what his beam won't do and nothing about the room it's holding up.

Which means the slow answer in that pause isn't a gap in him. It's the actual subject, and nobody has asked him about it in years.

You are specified by the weight you carry, and never by the weight you turn down. The written Word states the faith as load rather than limit, and the Holy Spirit is the one putting real weight on it in you.

This Isn't a Criticism of the Men Who Taught You

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would wound you and I refuse to write it.

The people who taught you what not to do weren't narrow men. Most of them had seen something fail, and the firmness in their voice is memory of a collapse rather than contempt for anybody. Nearly all of what they told you is correct and has kept people safe.

I'm not asking you to think less of them, and I'm not asking you to go back and correct anybody. You can hold every refusal you were handed and still be able to say what you're carrying.

You can keep every limit you were taught and still name the load. Scripture supplies the carrying without disparaging anyone who taught you the limits, and the Holy Spirit adds rather than demolishes.
